Chief Medical Examiner's journal
|
Monday, January 1:
As Rhodes left the library, Dr. Prouty, the medical examiner, came briskly into the room, his hat perched on the back of his head. He plopped his small black satchel onto a chair, rolled the butt of a dead cigar from one corner of his mouth to the other, and stared coldly at his friend, Inspector Queen.
"Dick Queen," he growled, "I'm getting sick and tired of being sent for just when I'm starting for home! What is it now? Ah! Another stiff. Nothing but stiffs! Well, there'll be no autopsy tonight. Is that it, there? Or are you keeping another one from me as a surprise?"
Ellery Queen, writing in The Perfect Crime, 1942.
